Takashi Iizuka admits we may have seen Sonic 2022 too early

Back in May, fans got the first look at the new Sonic The Hedgehog game in development. The trailer was revealed during a live stream event to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the franchise. While fans are still questioning what the game is, Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka admitted that it may have been too early to reveal the game. In an interview with 4Gamer translated by Nintendo Enthusiast, Iizuka admitted:

“We haven’t announced a brand new action game for the Sonic series since Sonic Forces, and that caused fans to worry. While it was a bit premature, I wanted to at least take the occasion of the 30th anniversary to announce that a brand new title was in development.”

On the one hand, I get wanting to put the teaser out. It’s the 30th anniversary of the blue blur! That is a huge milestone and the fans are eager to see what is coming for the future of the franchise. On the other hand, with COVID still affecting a lot of development the game could very likely be delayed. Time will tell if Sonic Team hits the 2022 release date and I wish them all the best in their efforts to do so. But if a delay happens to avoid crunch or keep the staff safe during the pandemic, I can take a couple of months and wait for the game to finish safely. Not like I have a massive back catalog to kill off.

The untitled Sonic The Hedgehog game is slated (for now) for release in 2022 for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
