The PlayStation Game Pass will include classic games

Project Spartacus, Sony's rumored Game Pass competitor, is supposedly pretty close to launching.

In the most recent episode of his podcast GrubbSnax, games insider Jeff Grubb revealed some information on Sony’s upcoming Project Spartacus. The service, supposedly, is the PlayStation’s answer to Microsoft’s Game Pass service. Sony hasn’t officially announced this service yet, but with the major success of Game Pass for Xbox and PC, a PlayStation version is a logical step for Sony.

If Grubb’s information is correct, we now know two additional things about Project Spartacus. One: classic games are going to apparently be a big part of the service. Two: it’s nearly ready for launch.

“It’s probably getting pretty close to this actually launching,” Grubb said in the podcast. “Something’s probably going to happen by the end of this month. And I don’t think that necessarily means publicly, I think in terms of the internal milestone of where the service needs to be.”

What we know about the PlayStation Game Pass so far

According to Grubb, the PlayStation Game Pass will have three different subscription tiers: Essential for $10 USD, Extra for $13, and Premium for $161. Grubb says the pricing isn’t finalized and we know little about what each tier provides. However, the Premium tier apparently does offer access to classic games.

Unfortunately, we don’t know exactly what this feature entails right now. “I don’t know what classic games means,” said Grubb, “but I do know that it’s a major part of this premium tier. So you have game trials, classic games and streaming on this premium tier.”

Backwards compatibility for the PlayStation 4 and 5 is certainly lacking compared to the Xbox series. Project Spartacus could potentially remedy this deficiency, and from the sounds of it, the industry is on board. Even Xbox head Phil Spencer agrees, calling a PlayStation Game Pass an “inevitability.” We’ll just have to wait for official word from Sony on this inevitability. Perhaps at the next State of Play event?
