Valve is willing to add Game Pass to Steam

Valve doesn't want to make its own Game Pass, but Gabe Newell is interested in putting Game Pass on Steam.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Valve co-founder Gabe Newell talked about plans to put a Game Pass-like service on Steam. Newell stated that they’re weren’t working on making a Game Pass competitor of their own. However, the company is interested in bringing Microsoft’s Game Pass to Steam instead.

“I don’t think it’s something that we think we need to do ourselves, building a subscription service at this time,” Newell told PC Gamer. “But for their customers, it’s clearly a popular option, and we’d be more than happy to work with them to get that on Steam.”

Given how successful the service has been for Microsoft and the benefits it provides to consumers, integrating it onto Steam would be a massive move. As news of a PlayStation answer to Game Pass circulates, it may only be a matter of time before Steam heads down a similar route.

Will we be getting Game Pass on Steam anytime soon?

Newell’s words give no indication on whether or not Game Pass will launch on Steam. But it wouldn’t be the first subscription service to work natively with the platform. EA Play, EA’s subscription service, is available on Steam as well.

As for Game Pass, it looks like Valve and Microsoft have at least begun talks around this idea. Said Newell: “We’ve talked to people there quite a bit about that topic. ‘If your customers want it, then you should figure out how to make it happen.’ That’s where we’re at.”

In the meantime, Valve is celebrating the launch of the Steam Deck, its handheld PC-like console. The first units are launching now to those who pre-ordered them. If Valve does put Game Pass on its platform, it may be a while before it happens.
