Artist behind Jet Set Radio, and director of Yakuza 1 & 2 returns to SEGA

Ryuta Ueda returns as Toshihiro Nagoshi leaves.

Ryuta Ueda, best known for his work as the art director for Jet Set Radio and the first two Yakuza games, has rejoined SEGA in May this year after seven years working for Yahoo! Japan.

Ueda’s work with the company spanned from the ’90s to 2014 when he left to join Yahoo! Japan. VGC spotted a Facebook post Ueda made in May announce his departure from Yahoo! and his return to SEGA.

From now on, I will focus on making games again. Not only do I feel the excitement of making things, but I am also smiling a little at the thought of seeing old friends and meeting new people. I would like to fully demonstrate what I have cultivated through experience.

It’s interesting to note that Ueda’s return to SEGA comes at the same time as Toshihiro Nagoshi’s departure. Nagoshi, who is currently in talks to join NetEase, was previously the Chief Creative Officer at SEGA and development head for the Yakuza series. Ueda’s history with the first two games makes him a prime candidate to take Nagoshi’s seat.

Popularity for Jet Set Radio is also gaining momentum upon the announcement of Beat being included in Super Monkey Ball: Banana Mania. In addition, excitement surrounding Bomb Rush Cyberfunk, a spiritual successor to Jet Set, helped bring attention as well. Rumors are already circulating on whether Ueda’s return could also mean a return to the Jet Set series.

At this time, it remains uncertain what Ueda’s new role in SEGA is. His history with the company, however, makes his return exciting for longtime fans. The future of Ueda’s SEGA career is sure to produce many memorable new games.
