The Polymega will soon receive a Nintendo 64 module

The EM-05 Ultra Element Module, designed to let users run Nintendo 64 games on the Polymega, is anticipated for next year.

Earlier this week, Playmaji revealed the next module that will be available for its multi-system retro console Polymega. The EM-05 Ultra Element Module allows Polymega users to play their Nintendo 64 cartridges on the system. Playmaji anticipates a 2022 release for the module.

The release of the Polymega has been a long time coming, with Playmaji finally beginning to ship out units to customers in September of this year. Now, the company is looking to expand its library of supported consoles with the N64 being the next stop.

Playmaji is aiming to release the Polymega Nintendo 64 module sometime in 2022. Pricing details haven’t been revealed yet, though based on previous modules, we can expect it’ll go for $79 USD.

What the Polymega Nintendo 64 module will include

This is the fifth module for the Polymega; previous add-ons added support for the NES, SNES, Genesis, 32X, TurboGrafx 16, and PC Engine among other consoles. The EM-05 module includes a Polymega add-on featuring a Nintendo 64 cartridge slot and four controller ports. A Polymega-style N64 controller is also included. Playmaji expects that the module will support at least 90 percent of the N64 library at launch; more games will become compatible via updates.

According to Playmaji CEO and co-founder Bryan Bernal, the company decided on the Nintendo 64 for the next Polymega module due to consumer demand. It was the most requested module as there are few hardware options for playing N64 games besides an original console. Considering Nintendo’s own Switch Online support for Nintendo 64 is buggy and lacking, this module comes at the right time. As Bernal put it in an interview with Nintendo Life:

Nintendo has the tools and resources to improve their emulation significantly over time, so I imagine any issues that are currently present at the launch of their service will improve with future updates. If they wanted to, they could probably even perfect N64 emulation. But […] I think Polymega will provide a more authentic experience for players because you simply can’t have an authentic experience with just a handful of games on offer.
