Shinji Mikami wants the rumored Resident Evil 4 remake to “make the story better”

Asked about the rumors of a Resident Evil 4 remake by VG247, Mikami expressed support for the idea.

So many people have speculated on whether or not Capcom will remake the acclaimed horror game Resident Evil 4. Following its remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3: Nemesis, the fourth game in the long-running series seems like the next logical step. And it seems like Resident Evil 4’s director and writer Shinji Mikami is on board with the idea, with one caveat: he wants Capcom to improve the story.

“Fans will most likely want it,” Mikami said to VG247 when asked about a potential fourth Resident Evil remake. “And so that’s a good thing.” He added: “It would be great if Capcom could do a great job and make the story better, and put out a good product.”

As rumors continue to fly on a potential RE4 remake, Mikami’s comments are sure to add more fuel to the fire. Yet they also seem to confirm that if a remake is happening, he’s not involved with it.

Why does Shinji Mikami want to improve Resident Evil 4’s story?

With a game as revered as Resident Evil 4, many would consider story changes (even minute ones) to be blasphemous. But according to Mikami, it would provide an opportunity to tell a narrative without rushing the writers — as happened with the original game.

Mikami told VG247 that Capcom only gave him three weeks to write the whole story. Given how tumultuous RE4’s development was and how many iterations it had, that’s not a huge surprise. You can definitely argue that given the circumstances, Mikami did an excellent job. Yet Mikami wasn’t fully satisfied with the finished product.

His words also indicate that if Capcom is working on an RE4 remake, Mikami isn’t involved. The language he uses suggests that he doesn’t know whether or not a remake project is in the works. With the recent launch of RE4 on Oculus Quest, it’s clear that the game still holds weight in Capcom’s eyes. We’ll just have to wait for an official confirmation from Capcom themselves on if this remake is happening.

Are you hoping for a Resident Evil 4 remake, and do you think they should try to improve the story? Let us know?
