See a glimpse of the grotesque future in this new Warhammer 40,000: Darktide trailer

In the grim darkness of the far future, there is only war. Microsoft and developer Fatshark unveiled a new entry in the beloved Warhammer series. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide. Form the makers of Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide and Warhammer: Vermintide 2, Warhammer 40,000: Darktide looks to take the graphic visuals and tight co-op gameplay to the 42nd Millennium.

The roughly 90-second trailer shows off the grotesque and darkened futuristic world of Warhammer 40,000. Players fight on Tertium, within The Hive, and as a new sinister evil emerges to destroy the city, you and your squad of Rejects are tasked with smiting this unearthly foe.

The trademark co-op combat the studio is known for makes a return, now replacing magic and melee weapons with the tools of the dark future, from bolters to lasers. Surprisingly, a deep customization mode exists, and a variety of classes are available to be chosen from for combat. The trailer showcases the same overwhelmingly satisfying gameplay that put Fatshark on the map, with enemies bursting at the seams, and limbs flying like confetti. It’s a grim future but someone has to fight the evil, and punish it with impunity.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide: What do we know?

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is the follow-up from Fatshark: the team that brought players Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide, and its successor, Warhammer: Vermintide 2. The two preceding titles were lauded for their incredible scope of action and visual fidelity, from the sharp visuals of attacking vermin to the sound of a hammer bashing the skulls of the enemies.

The games featured sharp, deep, customization and a strong attention to creating the best possible four-player co-op experience, an important feat these days as the most similar game on the market continues to be Pay Day 2, now going strong for the past 10 years. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide looks to be a pivotal chapter to the Warhammer video game renaissance that has been happening the past few years, from Necromunda: Hired Gun to Warhammer 40,000 Mechanicus to the announcement of Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2. Some have argued there are too many Warhammer games, but for this Warhammer fan who’s been discovering the world and lore through the video games, there are simply not enough.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide is scheduled for release on Nov. 30, 2022, is a console exclusive to the Xbox Series X/S and is a Day One launch on Xbox Gamepass. Warhammer 40,000: Darktide also launches for Steam and can be wishlisted here.
