Resident Evil 4 gets the PS1 demake treatment

Rustic Games BR has uploaded a video demonstrating the El Gigante fight in PS1 style.

While the video game mainstream is obsessed with remakes, the opposite is brewing as a popular movement within the indie scene: the demake. Taking a game and remaking it for inferior hardware (or in the style of that hardware) represent a great challenge for indie developers. Recreating the gameplay and the feeling of the era you’re emulating requires an attention to detail, but the end result is worth it if you stick with it.

We’ve seen several incredible fan-made demakes in the past few months such as the incredible Bloodborne PSX project. Now, there’s another project that takes Resident Evil 4 and turns it into a PS1-esque game. Rustic Game BR has recreated the game splendidly in retro style, and it’s a genuinely impressive rendition.

The latest demonstration depicts Leon Kennedy battling against the first El Gigante. It’s an iconic scene (from a game full of them) that’s perfect for showing off what Resident Evil 4 would look like on the PS1.

Seeing Resident Evil 4 in the PS1 style is mind-blowing

Even for a demonstration, it’s incredible how much care Rustic put into reimagining Resident Evil 4 as a PS1 title. It’s not surprising, though, considering he’s previously rendered other modern games with retro graphics, including The Last of Us. And this isn’t even the first time a Resident Evil game has been demade, as last year, we were treated to a Castlevania-esque rendition of Resident Evil Village.

Rustic Games BR previously released a gameplay demonstration of the PS1 Resident Evil 4 back in November. You can try the game out for yourself here. Note: this isn’t actually a PS1 game, so you can’t run it on the actual system.
