Resident Evil 2 Remake VR mod brings the scares into virtual reality

A modder is working to bring Resident Evil 2 Remake into VR, and the results are absolutely stunning.

It’s a good time for virtual reality and Resident Evil fans right now. Following the successful release of Resident Evil VII, a game designed with virtual reality in mind, the possibility of other RE titles coming to VR was opened up. The recent port of Resident Evil 4 to the Oculus Quest 2, despite it facing criticism for censoring dialogue, showed just how well the older Resident Evil titles work in VR.

One game that Capcom isn’t planning to port to virtual reality (at least, yet) is Resident Evil 2 Remake. The highly-acclaimed remake of the highly-acclaimed 1998 horror title left quite a mark on the Resident Evil fandom, but no word on an official VR port yet. We say official because a modder by the name of praydog is close to finishing up work on an unofficial VR version of RE2R.

This Resident Evil 2 Remake VR mod isn’t publicly available yet, but some publications have been given early release builds to show the mod off. You can see some footage of the game in action below courtesy of Eurogamer.

What you can expect from the Resident Evil 2 Remake VR mod

To make this mod work, praydog spent over two years studying and modifying the RE Engine to support a first-person perspective for RE2R. Movement and shooting is fully motion-controlled, but reloading, menus, and object interactions are not. It’s not surprising how well the game translates over to VR, with the game’s gore graphics and zombie animations especially hitting different when you’re seeing it in virtual reality.

It’s important to keep in mind that this mod isn’t ready for public release and has basically been engineered from the ground up. As such, there’s going to be some jankiness and glitches involved. However, seeing the progress praydog has already made with this mod, we can’t wait to finally give it a shot. The modder plans to add support for VR for Resident Evil 3 Remake and Village, as well as a proper RE7 PC VR version.
