Paper Mario is coming to Switch Online on Dec. 10

The first in the long-running Mario spin-off series will soon hit Nintendo Switch Online.

Another classic Nintendo 64 title is coming to the Switch, and it’s arriving soon! Paper Mario, the first in the long-running Mario spin-off series, is launching on Nintendo Switch Online on Dec. 10.

Paper Mario is the first additional game added to Nintendo Switch Online after the Expansion Pack was released in October. Intelligent Systems developed the game and has followed it up with five sequels — the latest of which, The Origami King, launched last year.

What can you expect with Paper Mario on Switch Online?

Paper Mario is the first game in the long-running series of the same name, launching in early 2001 as one of the last first-party games for the Nintendo 64. In it, the paper-ized plumber goes on an adventure with a ragtag group of partners going to stop Bowser, who’s once again kidnapped Princess Peach. Bowser plans to use the Star Rod, a magical items that grants wishes, to give himself supreme power.

When Nintendo revealed the Switch Online Expansion Pack, it showed Paper Mario as a game planned for release on the service — though not at launch. We know that 38 N64 games are destined to hit the service thanks to data miners. Considering Paper Mario cartridges can be expensive, this may be the best way to experience the game nowadays.

Many have criticized the Expansion Pack for its price point and imperfect emulation — including input lag for Ocarina of Time. For Paper Mario, input lag may not be as important since it’s less action, more RPG. Still, it may be best to wait for technical information about the port to come out before signing up for Switch Online if you’re anxious to play it.
