Xenoblade Chronicles 3 returns to Nintendo Switch for another adventure

“Fighting in order to live and living to fight. That’s the way of our world.”

Exciting news continues to stream in from the latest Nintendo Direct. As per usual, Nintendo likes to try and save the most exciting bit of news for last, and they certainly followed through this time. Xenoblade Chronicles finally returns with Xenoblade Chronicles 3, releasing on Nintendo Switch this fall.

Explore the world of Xenoblade Chronicles 3

The game is set after the events of Xenoblade Chronicles and Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Taking place in the world of Aionios, the nations of Keves and Agnus are at war. Keves centers its technology around mechanical technology, while Agnus uses ether technology. Xenoblade Chronicles fans should recognize ether as a defining feature of the series, the base unit of life.

A wide cast of characters were revealed in the trailer as well, and Nintendo has since released different splash arts and descriptions of who they are.

Six soldiers hailing from these nations, will take part in a grand tale with “life” as its central theme.

  • Noah: One of the protagonists of Xenoblade Chronicles 3 and a solider of Keves. Noah is also an “off-seer” who mourns for soldiers who’ve lost their lives on the battlefield.
  • Lanz: An ally of Noah’s who wields a great sword that doubles as a shield.
  • Eunie: A childhood friend of Noah and Lanz who has a sharp tongue and rough personality. She specialises in healing her allies in battle.
  • Mio: The other protagonist of this story, Mio is a soldier of Agnus and an off-seer like Noah.
  • Taion: A tactician who fights alongside Mio using his smarts and insight.
  • Sena: This soldier is an ally of Mio and Taion. Despite her petite figure, Sena wields immense physical strength!

A few other mysterious figures appear in the trailer as well, including a masked High Entia woman, a race from the series most notable for the wings on their heads, dressed in dark colors. Almost as if a counterpart, we see another woman in golds and reds, also wearing a mask. Additionally, Noah seems to be wielding the famed Monado, Shulk’s iconic weapon from the original game—or at least, a version of it.

When does the game release?

Xenoblade Chronicles 3 launches on Nintendo Switch in September 2022. A new installment of the series hasn’t come out since 2017, with the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2. Before the new one comes out, you have eight months to catch up with the previous two games—which I highly recommend. All games are available on Nintendo Switch and have an immerse world and story to explore. Xenoblade Chronicles fans, look forward to hearing more news about the new installment and its gameplay before release!
