Update on Tomb Raider 2 shared by Alicia Vikander

Lara Croft's actor reveals discussions are in place for Tomb Raider 2.

Alicia Vikander shared news about the long-anticipated sequel to 2018’s Tomb Raider in a recent interview with Total Film.

Vikander, the film’s lead actor, states she recently had a series of Zoom calls with Misha Green. During the calls, Vikander and Green discussed plans for the new movie. Green, known for directing Lovecraft Country, signed on to write and direct the upcoming Tomb Raider sequel earlier this year.

According to Vikander, many of their discussions centered around action sequences for the new Tomb Raider film. In addition, Vikander and Green brainstormed ideas of major stunts they could include in the movie.

It’s so much fun on the Zooms I’ve had with Misha to finally sit with another woman my own age. I get to talk about big action set pieces and stunts that we want to make. I’m hoping that we get on track and get to do something together.

Although nothing is finalized, Vikander hints that a new script will come soon. Vikander also adds that she has a lot of faith in Green’s work and is excited to work with her on the new film. While work on the new movie remains early in pre-production, Vikander’s comments provide hope for fans.

A Rocky Road for Tomb Raider 2

Prior to Green’s arrival on the project, news about Tomb Raider 2 remained in limbo. Much of the uncertainty stemmed from the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition, Vikander giving birth to her first child with husband Michael Fassbender contributed to holding back progress on the sequel.

Originally, Ben Wheatley was set to direct the new Tomb Raider film. Additionally, the film had a planned release window of March 2021. However, with Wheatley’s departure, paired with the other setbacks, MGM pulled the plug on the original plans.

In May, Green provided hope to fans on Twitter when she announced the completion of the script’s first draft. The working title of the film is Tomb Raider: Obsidian. While this post had fans thrilled, Green added that work was far from over. Even the title was awaiting approval at this point.

A Resurgence for Video Game Movies

Although Tomb Raider (2018) received mixed reviews from users on IMDb, the film’s commercial success made a sequel seemingly guaranteed. While the film is not perfect, Vikander’s portrayal of Lara Croft helped win over fans of the video games.

Traditionally, movie adaptations of video games are received poorly from fans and critics alike. However, a resurgence in the genre proves that when done right, movie adaptations of video games can create cinema magic. Although fans were originally skeptical, last year’s Sonic the Hedgehog became a smash hit with an upcoming sequel already in the works.

In addition, the new Mortal Kombat movie released this year remains hugely popular with fans. The success of the film was even surprising to WarnerMedia executive vice president Brad Wilson. Earlier this year, he stated that the film far surpassed expectations on HBO Max and became a top asset on the platform. With a Resident Evil film reboot also on the way next month, it remains an exciting time for movies based on video games.

For now, it seems like Tomb Raider fans still have quite a wait for the sequel. However, the update provided by Vikander, as well as Green’s successful track record with Lovecraft Country provides much hope. In a time where movies based on video games are finally being taken seriously, Tomb Raider 2 will likely build and improve on the original.
