Sonic 1 gets a 3D Classics remake

SEGA has announced that Sonic the Hedgehog 1 will be joining Space Harrier and Super Hang-On in the SEGA classics that are being given a stereoscopic 3D overhaul for the Nintendo 3DS.

‘3D Sonic the Hedgehog’ is coming to the Japanese 3DS eShop next week, on May 15th 2013. Aside from the inclusion of the stereoscopic 3D visuals, the game is set to feature some other added bits and bobs, to help it stand out from the other millions of Sonic ports SEGA has pumped out over the years in some form or another.

Added features are said to include:

  • State Save function – Save anywhere in a level
  • Level Select – SEGA has images showing a level select function – the same screen as when you cheat to get the level select in the original version
  • Spin Dash – Like in Sonic 2
  • Japanese and International versions of the game – They have minor differences between the two version
  • Button Configuration – Every little helps, I guess… even though Sonic only really has one button for every move
  • Screen Mode – Choose between ‘normal’ and ‘classic’. Classic reproducing the effects of a CRT display (something the kids these days probably don’t know about). The screen surface is rounded, and has a “bleeding” effect
  • Console sound choice – Choose between the Mega Drive 1 and Mega Drive 2 sound chips (apparently they produced different sounds… something I’ve personally never picked up on)

So there you go. Another version of Sonic 1 is coming to yet another platform. But I guess, at least SEGA is putting more effort on this one than a lot of the other ports around – offering features and choices that weren’t there before. Let’s just hope it plays better than the GBA version!
