Shin Megami Tensei V introduces new characters and stat upgrades

Shin Megami Tensei fans, this one’s for you. We’re talking about Shin Megami Tensei V – the hotly anticipated, upcoming post-apocalyptic role-playing game by Atlus.

To drum up hype for the game’s release on Nov. 12, SEGA and Atlus have been putting out missives in the form of ‘Shin Megami Tensei news’, dripfeeding eager followers with little nuggets of information about the game.

In the most recent update, Atlus unveiled a variety of new Shin Megami Tensei V characters and gameplay elements, as Gematsu reports. What’s that, I hear you say? Link said video for your perusal? Well, oddly specific request, but far be it from me to disappoint my legions of fans. Have a gander below.

You must be this tall, and this Japanese, to view.

Shin Megami Tensei V: Shohei Yakumo

Among the debuting characters shown off are Shohei Yakumo, a “mysterious man who stands in the way of the protagonist as he advances through Da’at,” and Nuwa, a “goddess who has worked alongside Yakumo since he was young to fulfill a certain goal.” One can only hope said goal to be a savoury one, though knowing this franchise, it’s pretty unlikely.

New features revealed

Also showcased are “new stat/skill building features for the protagonist,” as is standard for these types of games. As you explore, the video explains, you’ll “come across Essences, spiritual entities embedded with the power of demons. Essences are infused with the skills and affinities of that specific demon. By fusing them with the protagonist, you can customize his skills and affinities to your liking.”

The systems on display look rather cool, and will doubtless allow every playthrough to be totally unique.

That outfit, though? It’s, uh… been done. Yeah. Let’s put it that way.

Atlus additionally took some fan questions in the video, addressing one in particular: “yes, in the game you will be able to shorten the attack animations during battle. You can configure this feature in your options menu. You can also fast-forward enemy skills as well, aside from a few exceptions. We also have an “auto-play” feature which will automatically repeat a standard attack.” So yes, all you lazy bums who wanted to automate the experience, there you go. Hope you’re satisfied.

I kid. Mostly. SMTV comes out this autumn, and is available for pre-order.
