SEGA files trademark for Sonic Frontiers

Could we be dashing towards an official announcement?

Earlier this year, SEGA released a teaser for the next Sonic game coming in 2022. Now, a recently discovered trademark filed in October may have revealed the game’s official title: Sonic Frontiers.

On October 22, SEGA trademarked the title in both English and Japanese. Although no official announcement was made, other Sonic games in the past had their titles leaked in similar fashion. Sonic Unleashed, Sonic Colors and Sonic Lost World all received registered trademarks shortly before their official announcements. If the new game follows the same pattern, it shouldn’t be long until Sonic Frontiers gets an official announcement.

SEGA already confirmed that a new Sonic game will release next year. During the Sonic Central livestream on May 27, they showed off a very short teaser featuring the Blue Blur speeding through a forest. Afterwards, a cryptic logo appeared on screen, followed by the release window of 2022.

Although the teaser revealed very little about the upcoming game, we do know that it will be available on all major platforms. Additionally, Takashi Iizuka stated during an interview in June that this new game will shape Sonic’s path for the next decade. Iizuka’s comments hint that the new game will be a major next step for the franchise and completely change what to expect from a modern Sonic game.

Aside from the hype, however, much remains unknown as to what the new game will look like. That being said, it appears hopeful we will receive more information in the near future. If the trademark is indeed the title of the new game, we know that Sonic Frontiers will release sometime in 2022. It will launch for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC.
