Sonic 2022 To Lay the Path for “Next Decade” Says Iizuka

With last month’s Sonic Central stream behind us and the promise of the next Sonic game for 2022, the Sonic cycle begins anew. There’s a lot of intrigue surrounding the new title, and with a recent interview with Takashi Iizuka that interest isn’t going to slow down anytime soon.

So, what did he say? Well as expected, Iizuka remains hush on the finer details of the game, but when asked about Sonic 2022 and his expectations for the game, his answer was perhaps bigger in scope then most would expect.

While celebrating 30 years of Sonic titles and thinking about what the modern gameplay experience should be for a Sonic title, we also needed to think about what path forward we should plan to take for the next decade… I do believe we will see an advancement in what a modern Sonic game can be.

It is not every day that Sonic Team talks up a game like this. In a separate interview, Iizuka expressed hope that the new game would be of similar significance to Sonic Adventure. Seeing as that was the series defining first step into 3D, what leap Sonic 2022 hopes to take is anybody’s guess. With mumblings that the game will be open world, it makes you wonder if that is what he might be alluding to.

How do these new interviews effect your expectations for the Sonic 2022? Be sure to let us know.

I take immense pride in my ability to vanish on an F1 Grand Prix weekend. Very good at getting invested in dying hardware (Buying a Vita at launch was NOT a mistake). It is also my sworn duty to ensure every person I meet has played Gravity Rush. That includes you, reader, play Gravity Rush, I'll know if you haven't.
