Power Idolz unveils surreal new Sonic the Hedgehog phone dock

OK, bit of a bizarre question. What’s your favourite part of Sonic the Hedgehog? No, not the game – although any answers other than ‘Green Hill Zone’ or ‘Star Light Zone’ would not have been accepted. No, I’m talking about the guy himself. As in, his anatomy. I want you to think really hard, picture his cartoonishly proportioned blue pelt, and identify your favourite bit. Trust me, this is going somewhere.

Don’t say feet. Don’t say feet. Don’t say feet.

Done? I imagine there’s a fair bit of diversity in all your answers. Perhaps you went for his spines, his iconic red sneakers, his tail. All perfectly valid. But if your body part of choice is his torso? Well, then this product is… not for you.

That long-winded intro brings us to the Eldritch abomination that NintendoWire reports on today. SEGA and geeky tat overlords Power Idolz have announced a new Sonic-themed mobile phone charging dock, and it’s… well. Just have a gander – preferably at a safe distance to allow for any projectile vomiting incurred.

I can’t even use the ‘therapist tells you creepy thing isn’t real’ joke here, because this… is.

As you can see, this is less a piece of Sonic merch and more a piece of… well, his limbs. Grafted brutally onto your unsuspecting device as it leeches the few remaining sparks of life from the dismembered remains of our beloved spiked hero.

If you don’t have a phone and – for some unfathomable reason – simply want to display this thing for the fun (?) of it, SEGA are also including a replica of the original European Mega Drive box of the first Sonic game, which can occupy the unenviable spot in the hedgehog’s corpse in a gadget’s stead.

All according to the phone’s escape plan.

Sonic the Hedgehog charger release date

All cynicism aside, this is at least a charmingly eccentric idea from a design standard; something truly bonkers that is sure to turn heads when you’ve visitors over. Sure, those heads will be turning towards the door, and rapidly at that, but hey! Can’t have everything.

The charger will be launching in the UK this December. Will you be picking one up? Let us know!
