New rumors suggest NetherRealm intentionally leaked Mortal Kombat 12

Will MK12 get over here in the near future?

Jonathan Andersen, a Senior Production Manager at NetherRealm Studios, recently deleted a Tweet that supposedly leaks Mortal Kombat 12.

The post shows off Andersen’s workspace with cluttered artwork from Injustice and Mortal Kombat. However, the true point of interest is on the top right corner of the picture. If you look closely, you can see a file titled “MK12_Mast…”. In addition, there are other MK files for popular characters like Reptile.

Although Andersen deleted the original Tweet, fans downloaded the picture and spread it across the internet. As a result, the rumors of Mortal Kombat 12 in development continue to spread like wildfire.

One theory cropping up amongst fans is that the leak was intentional by NetherRealm. Although neither the developers or Mortal Kombat’s publisher Warner Bros. made a statement, other text in the image appears deliberate. If you look closely at the email on the computer screen, it states, “our fans eagerly scrape the internet for any trace.” In addition, the email adds to, “take extra care with this material.”

Potential Mortal Kombat 12 leak zoomed in

Why MK12 is NetherRealm’s most logical next step

The new leak coincides with the rumors circulating last year that NetherRealm will prioritize Mortal Kombat 12 over Injustice 3. In August 2021, Giant Bomb’s Jeff Grubb discussed how uncertainty of WB Interactive’s long-term future at the time made working on a new Mortal Kombat game the safer move.

Another reason it makes sense for NetherRealm to focus on MK 12 is the franchise’s enormous surge in mainstream popularity. While MK was never an obscure title by any means, the successful film adaptation and upcoming sequel place the violent fighting fest front and center in pop culture.
