MTG Secret Lair announces Street Fighter and Fortnite crossovers

Shh… it’s a secret. One of the “best worse-kept secrets,” in fact. For those familiar with Wizards of the Coast’s Magic: The Gathering, it will come as no surprise that new packs featuring Fortnite and Street Fighter characters are set to appear in Secret Lair, sometime in 2022. So, soonish. The exact release date appears to be a secret, too.

Announced at the Magic Showcase 2021 on Tuesday, Fortnite and Street Fighter will join the likes of Year of the RatThe Walking Dead and recently announced Lord of The Rings. The card decks are special crossovers, print-on-demand and available for a limited time only.

Secret Lair is not without controversy. Previous packs have created issues with availability. Players have repeatedly complained of game balancing and lore upsets. The LOTR has caused a stir on Reddit for being designated Modern Legal. The Walking Dead’s Rick, Steadfast leader is considered one of the stronger cards in the game currently. And some of the Secret Lair cards, when resold, are much higher priced as individuals.

New cards, less controversy

However, Wizards hopes to quell some of the frustrations with the new Secret Lair cards.  Fortnite packs will be reprints of cards that are already part of Magic the Gathering catalogue. They will feature new art, but will have the same skills as the older cards they are modeled after.

Secret Lair edition Street Fighter will have new and unique cards not previously found in the game. The gameplay mechanics will feature the classic characters moves, such as Chun-Li’s Hyakuretsukyaku. Months later, the cards will be reprinted as more traditional, non-Street Fighter cards. They will be distributed through random booster retail packs.

For the moment, Wizards of the Coast is keeping what Magic the Gathering sets and prices will look like under lock and key. So keep an eye out for more information to follow.
