Golden Joystick Awards 2021 nominations for Best Gaming Hardware include classic SEGA consoles

The SEGA Genesis, Saturn, and Dreamcast have been nominated for Best Gaming Hardware of All Time for the Golden Joystick Awards.

The 39th Golden Joystick Awards is right around the corner, and this year, it’s celebrating 50 years of video gaming. In addition to voting on the Ultimate Game of All Time, gamers can also determine what the Best Gaming Hardware of All Time is based on a selection of 20 consoles and systems spawning back to the earliest gaming generations. SEGA secured three nominations for this award with the SEGA Genesis / Mega Drive, the Saturn, and the Dreamcast.

With these three consoles on the ticket, SEGA actually ties with Sony for the second-most amount of nominated systems. (Nintendo has a whopping eight.) The competition is fierce, and the SEGA trinity will likely have a tough time beating out the other consoles. However, it’s also an incredible recognition of the impact that these consoles have had over the years.

This Golden Joystick Awards show is honoring 50 years of gaming — specifically, the release of the first commercially available game, Computer Space, in 1971. More information on the awards can be found here.

Everything you need to know about the 39th Golden Joystick Awards

The judging panel for these Golden Joystick Awards consists of industry experts and gaming publications to determine the most important, beloved, and influential games and systems of the past 50 years. To determine the shortlisted consoles, a team of representatives from Retro Gamer and Edge Magazine determined the 20 most critical hardware releases in gaming’s history.

Now, look: we here at Mega Visions obviously have our favorite horses in this race. We are, after all, a publication heavily invested in covering SEGA games and consoles. So of course we think it’d be awesome for the Genesis, Saturn, or Dreamcast to win this award. But rather than attempt to sway the votes one way or another, we want to instead just encourage you to cast your vote. This is an event meant to celebrate gaming’s history as it enters the second half of its first century and to acknowledge that SEGA, among countless other developers, left a huge mark on the industry. Let’s treat it as such!

You can vote on the Golden Joystick Awards 2021 polls for Ultimate Game and Best Gaming Hardware here. Voting will be open until Friday, Nov. 12 at 6 PM Eastern Time.
