Final Fantasy XIV director on Xbox version: conversations with Microsoft are ‘positive’

An interview with Final Fantasy XIV director Naoki Yoshida confirmed that talks with Square and Microsoft on an Xbox port are going well.

In a recent interview with Easy Allies, Final Fantasy XIV director and producer Naoki Yoshida remained elusive when asked about a potential Xbox version of the game. This port is supposedly in the works at Square Enix, though it has yet to be officially announced. Statements about the game from the FF XIV staff have not explicitly said that the port is cancelled, but neither have they revealed any further details on the game.

However, Yoshida mentioned that Square Enix is actively talking with Microsoft on the project. According to him, discussions are moving in a positive motion. As he explains:

I feel bad for saying the same thing every time, but we are still in discussions with Microsoft. And I feel like our conversations are going in a positive tone. I don’t want to say that we do not have an Xbox version, but I’m hoping that the timing will be very soon that I’ll have some kind of update to the players. I’m sure there’s a lot of things that people want to ask about on this subject, and there’s a lot of things that I would love to share, but I’m afraid I’m unable to divulge on those details. So when the time comes — I’m sure the time will come. So if you could kindly stand by, that would be great.

What’s going on with Final Fantasy XIV on Xbox?

The modern version of Final Fantasy XIV launched for Windows and PlayStation 3 in 2013 and has since been ported to macOS, the PS4, and PS5. However, an Xbox port has so far eluded players. As you probably know, this is the second version of the game after the disastrous original launch in 2010. After Yoshida took charge of the game after its launch, he helped the team drive the game in a much better direction to craft the current version of FF XIV.

This has been the most successful Final Fantasy game to date, further fueling the possibility of an Xbox port to increase the playerbase even further. Until we get further information from either Square or Microsoft, we’ll just have to wait for any news on a Final Fantasy XIV Xbox version.

In the meantime, players can look forward to the upcoming Endwalker expansion which is set to launch on Nov. 23.
