Yuzo Koshiro to compose music for Infinity on GameBoy Color

Don’t worry, folks – no need to check your calendars in a state of panic. I know that anachronistic title is cause for concern, but rest assured there’s a totally plausible explanation. We haven’t spontaneously warped back to the late ’90s as a result of some freak accident (although I saw a lady wearing some garish clothes in town the other day that made me mighty suspicious).

No, the GameBoy Color title to which that existentialism-inducing headline refers is in fact a cancelled one – one that, until recently, was considered lost media, and which is now being revived courtesy of crowdfunding. We can only hope it’s more a Shovel Knight, and less a… well, Mighty No. 9. Sorry, dead horse. Had to dig you up one more time.

I mean, come on. Really now. Anyone suddenly fancy some Papa John’s?

What’s Infinity?

As TheGamer reports, Infinity, a game that “was originally in development from 1999 to 2001 by Affinix Software,” was canned owing to it being slated for a release date too close to the end of the GameBoy Colour’s lifespan. After all, might as well go for that GBA cheddar while it’s on the table, right? This incarnation too failed to materialise however, leaving the closest thing the game ever got to release being “an unfinished version that was released in 2016 as a ROM.” Not particularly glamourous, then.

Now, “20 years after its original development, a company called Incube8 Games teamed up with previous developers from Affinity” to bring Infinity back to life like some kind of stubborn, cockroach-infused Frankenstein’s monster. Check out the teaser trailer below.

Somewhere, Thanos is suddenly feeling very excited.

Feeling the Kickstarter love

Though the Kickstarter’s original campaign was expected to raise “a little over $24,000,” fans’ apparent generosity shone through, and so the fund “has completely obliterated that amount, reaching over $87,000.” I can’t help but feel that money could have been better spent or invested more wisely elsewhere, but who am I to judge? Come to think of it, probably “nobody”, considering my annual shovelware spend.

There is one supremely cool thing about the revival, which even my cynical heart can’t deny, though. Famed composer Yuzo Koshiro, whose work you’ll doubtless have heard in Streets of Rage, and yes, the OG Sonic the Hedgehog, has been brought on board to produce the game’s music. He broke the news on his Twitter, where he also took the opportunity to thank fans for their support. Take a look:

I like how he provides the total in Canadian dollars. Very useful information, eh, buddy. Thanks, guy.

Koshiro’s music has a very distinct tonal quality to it, which will almost assuredly be recognisable in whatever he composes for Infinity. This’ll also mark the first occasion he’s ever written for a GameBoy title, rounding out his repertoire of console work.

The remake is due out on a physical cartridge (revolting taste included with your purchase, Switch users) and you can bet we’ll be covering this intriguing artefact closer to the date.

Are you excited? Or a fan of Koshiro’s music? Let us know!
