Virtua Fighter future looks great, according to series producer

It’s been a big year for the Virtua Fighter franchise. It feels wild saying that again. With the release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown back in June, the series is back in the fighting game sphere. Luckily, it seems like it’s not going dormant again!

According to a new interview from Dengeki Online, Chief Producer Moriji Aoki had some fantastic news about Virtua Fighter’s future. In the interview, he discussed that Ultimate Showdown’s goal was to gauge interest in the series overall. Profit was never a principal factor in the game, but seen as a bonus if it made any. On those terms, the game exceeded the team and SEGA’s expectations. All this info was graciously provided by Twitter user Rooflemonger, who translated the interview to give cliff notes. You can check out his tweet below.

It would make sense now why Ultimate Showdown was a PlayStation Plus exclusive. That backs up the claim the game was never meant to go for profit since it was made free to players. That said, it’s wonderful to see enough people check it out to make SEGA believe the series has a future. Maybe we’ll see Virtua Fighter 6 sooner than later? Perhaps some older Virtua Fighter games get re-released in a collection? We can dream, right?

Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown is available now on PlayStation 4/5. Are you excited to see what comes next for the franchise? Let us know below!
