Venom probably won’t be the final boss in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Who will be the real final boss in Marvel's Spider-Man 2?

Ever since Sony and Insomniac Games first revealed the release date for Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, fan theories began flooding out almost as quickly as actual news. One aspect of the game that has many fans hung up in a web of theories is who amongst the webslinger’s rogues gallery will join the fray. So far, we already know of three villains who our two Spider-Men will have to face off against. However, we will almost certainly have plenty more to fight come October 20.

In 2018’s Marvel’s Spider-Man, players already got to face some of the Wall-Crawler’s heavy hitters like Electro, Scorpion, Rhino and Vulture. In addition, the game even began by taking down the notorious Wilson Fisk (AKA Kingpin). Yet, while all the promotional material centered around the underrated villain Mr. Negative, the game’s true final boss ended up being none other than Dr. Octopus.

So far, Spider-Man 2 boasts The Lizard, Kraven The Hunter and Venom amongst the new game’s baddies. And because of the symbiote’s heavy significance in the game’s plot, based on the trailers released so far, many fans assume Venom is a no-brainer for the game’s final boss. After all, Venom is one of Spidey’s greatest foes from the comics.

But I don’t think that’ll be the case. For my money, Venom as the main antagonist is too obvious. Sure, he’ll be a major foe in the game, but I think Insomniac is saving the spot of “final boss” for an even bigger enemy in Spider-Man’s rogues gallery.

Who will be the final boss in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2?

Having played both 2018’s Spider-Man and its spinoff Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales, I think Green Goblin will be Spider-Man 2’s final boss. Now, before you take your torches and pitchforks into the comments to tell me why I’m wrong, let me explain why I think that.

1. Insomniac doesn’t like to spoil the plot

As I previously mentioned, though Dr. Octopus was ultimately the main villain of Insomniac’s first Spider-Man game, he wasn’t showed off in pre-launch trailers. Instead, early trailers focused on a different villain in the game, Mr. Negative. At first, he seemed like the obvious main bad guy, as much of the early footage alluded to that.

However, when Insomniac showed off the other member’s of its interpretation of the Sinister Six, Mr. Negative only appeared as simply a member. Instead, the boss remained unseen. Though most longtime Spidey fans instantly knew by that point who the leader had to be, Insomniac kept their mouths shut.

So, if the developers follow in their own footsteps, then we know Venom can’t be the main villain. We already saw too much of him at this point for him to be the final boss. I think Insomniac is more likely to surprise us at launch with Norman Osborn dawning his iconic alter-ego instead.

2. Harry Osborn is Venom

Spider-Man Harry Osborn

The second reason I think Green Goblin will be the new game’s final boss is that we already know that Harry Osborn will be Venom. During the Game Awards 10-Year Concert, the supporting video to the musical performance clearly shows Norman Osborn walking up to the cryptic stasis module containing Harry from the first game. As he gets closer to the tank, the green turns to black, as the symbiote envelops its surroundings. Following that image, the camera cuts to the Venom reveal from the very first teaser trailer.

If Norman Osborn’s son ends up going on a murderous rampage across New York, wouldn’t he want to do something about it? Sure, in this universe, we know Norman’s got political pull, but what if that isn’t enough? It definitely wasn’t enough for him to contend against Otto Octavius in the previous game.

So, desperate times call for desperate measures. And if you played the first game, you already know that Norman has blueprints for militaristic Goblin armor and pumpkin bombs. What better time would he have to try his experimental Goblin-tech than when his son is rampaging through the streets in an alien symbiote?
