Double Fine, the developers behind Psychonauts 2, announced in a recent blog that they have multiple new projects lined up.

The developers continue in the blog adding that they like to experiment. In addition, Double Fine hints that their upcoming projects may be totally different to their previous outings. They add that they may look towards completely new ideas, visual styles, gameplay and emotions.

Double Fine’s transition from indie to Xbox

Double Fine first announced their latest outing, Psychonauts 2, in 2015. However, as the game received delays, the development studio was ultimately acquired by Microsoft in 2019. Therefore, while the game started as an indie projected funded through crowdsourcing, the end result released this year under the Xbox Game Studios banner.

As a result, whatever Double Fine’s next game will be, it will be the first project the company develops fully under the Xbox Game Studios umbrella. As the studio is open to a wealth of possibilities, it will be interesting to see what step they take to follow their latest smash hit.

Psychonauts 2 is a beloved title by both fans and critics alike. The charming game follows a group of child psychics who can travel into other peoples’ minds. It received nominations for multiple awards this year including IGN’s Best Gaming Story, Best Music and Best Art of 2021. In addition, the studio’s modern gem won the Golden Joystick Award for best Xbox game, as well as Xplay’s 2021 Game of the Year.
