Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will hit theaters in December 2024

The Blue Blur is heading back to the silver screen with Sonic the Hedgehog 3, releasing on December 20th, 2024.

Set your calendars: the third Sonic the Hedgehog film is coming to theaters in two years’ time. Paramount and SEGA announced that the third film in the highly successful Sonic film franchise was going forward not long after the sequel hit screens earlier this year. Now we know that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will debut on Dec. 20, 2024.

It’s a long way away, as to be expected since the second film was released only a few months ago. And with the upcoming show starring Knuckles on the way for 2023, we’ll have plenty of cinematic Sonic action in the meantime.

The Sonic the Hedgehog movie Twitter teased the upcoming film with a short Tweet announcing the release date. See that Tweet below:

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hitting theaters in two years

It seems like only yesterday that Sonic the Hedgehog 2 graced the silver screen, honestly. Considered by many to be superior to its predecessor, it also made a lot of money, surpassing the original to become the highest-grossing video game movie ever made. Needless to say, a sequel was inevitable.

We don’t have too many details on what Sonic the Hedgehog 3 will entail. Director Jeff Fowler confirmed that the movies won’t follow the game stories, so the third movie won’t adapt Sonic 3. (Makes sense, as Knuckles was already introduced.) We do have a hint of what to expect in the form of a teaser at the end of the second movie — which I won’t spoil here in case you still haven’t seen it.

Ben Schwartz has been confirmed to return as he also posted about the upcoming movie on his Twitter. It’s a safe bet that Colleen O’Shaunnessey and Idris Elba will return to voice Tails and Knuckles respectively, though this hasn’t been confirmed yet. There were reports that Jim Carrey is retiring from acting, so whether or not as Robotnik he’ll return is unknown.

What are you hoping for with the third Sonic movie? Let us know!
