Sonic Movie 2 gets new ‘Blue Justice’ trailer

Picture some of your favorite superheroes. Chances are your cranium will call to mind a selection of the classics: Batman, Spiderman, Wonder Woman. However, I’d wager that Sonic the Hedgehog is unlikely to crop up in that particular category. Unless we were counting chili dog consumption and 90s ‘tude as acts of traditional comic book heroism, which I was under the impression we weren’t. Maybe I’m square.

Sonic, the “dark and brooding” hero

Regardless, the Blue Blur is having a stab at the whole ‘dark and brooding, conflicted saviour of the people’ schtick all the same. It seems that in the upcoming sequel to his 2020 theatrical movie, which we’ve been reporting on quite extensively, he’ll be aping the Man of Bats in the most comedic on-the-nose manner possible – as a local hero nicknamed ‘Blue Justice’. Trademark pending, apparently. We got a peek at this moniker in the film’s original trailer, but now, Paramount (clearly going all in on pushing this joke under the assumption it’ll be a favourite, which I have my reservations about) have devoted an entire parodic TV spot to it. Check it out below:

Somewhere, Danny Elfman’s lawyer readies his pen.

I don’t think it’s a coincidence that Paramount would drop an ad like this right around the time WB are on the cusp of releasing a new outing for Batman – one which, if early impressions are to be believed, might be a’ight. Much like that time Winnie the Pooh coasted on Harry Potter’s coattails for some box office mojo (yes, really), a little bit of co-branding never hurt anybody.

Space Jam 2 scene to compare to Sonic.
Unless you’re Space Jam 2, in which case, just… don’t.

Theatrical and Paramount+ release dates

In the trailer, Ben Schwartz’s Sonic hams it up big time, adopting the stereotypically gravelly Batman voice before clearing his throat and giving way to more traditional narration. You had us going for, what, 10 seconds or so? I dig the visual reference to the opening of Sonic Adventure, though, and the fact we see more footage of Idris Elba’s Knuckles. Beyond that, it’s business as usual; including that same damn shot of Tails swerving in the Tornado and the gag with Sonic getting bodied by a missile, both of which we have now seen countless times. By the time I’m sat in the cinema seeing those moments on the big screen, I shall feel naught but numbness.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 launches in the United States on April 8th. It will then arrive on Paramount+ 45 days later!

How about you? Does this trailer excite you? Are you looking forward to the movie? Let us know!
