[Update] Sonic Mania Competition Mode announced

Race against your friends in all-new 2 player competition mode.

Update: Here is the official press release from SEGA regarding the Competition Mode.

Sonic Mania TM presents Bonus Stages, Time Attack Mode and new Special Stage materials

Burbank, California – August 8, 2017 – SEGA ® is pleased to announce that  Sonic Mania will feature  Bonus Stages (“Blue Spheres”) and Time Attack. This announcement joins the one that already made the Japanese company last week during the Comic-Con of San Diego in which it revealed that also would be available  Special Stages  in his expected title Sonic Mania.

In ” Blue Spheres “, players will take Sonic, Tails or Knuckles through a series of blue spheres to clear the level. But be careful! Once touched, the blue spheres will become red spheres and if you touch one of them you will instantly end the bonus stage. Players who successfully complete the  Bonus Stage  will receive silver medallions, while those who collect all blue spheres and rings will receive a perfect score and gold medallion.

A new mode in Sonic Mania has also been revealed: Time Attack . Show that you are the best of the best in  Time Attack . This new mode allows players to compete for being the fastest in the world, recording their time in the online ranking of the game.

In  Special Stages , players chase UFO enemies to secure several Chaos Emeralds. Collecting the blue spheres along the way will give your character an extra boost of speed at their feet. Once the meter is full, the Mach level  increases. Be careful and do not accelerate the stage!

Original Post: In the last few days leading up to Sonic Mania’s release, SEGA has revealed what possibly will be the last bit of Mania news. Sonic Mania was said to support two players in a nice co-op environment. This was first implemented in Sonic 2 and was a huge success. It allowed you to race against your siblings or friends in a fun split-screen experience.

Now, Sonic Mania can help relive those past experiences with Competition Mode. Battle against your friends as you race towards the goal hitting blazing speeds along the way. You can watch the trailer above. No word has been confirmed about online play, but for right now, it seems that it only supports local two player split screen. We will update this page if any other news regarding Competition Mode occurs.

Sonic Mania will be available for digital download on the Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch and PC on August 15th.
