SEGA Japan reveal new games and features for the Mega Drive Mini 2

Just in case you thought the bizarre trend of shrinking down classic consoles to the palm of your hand, a la the NES Classic, was over: think again, mortals. Not only have we got one version of the SEGA Genesis/Mega Drive already, but now there’s a bloody follow-up! That’s right; a sequel to a shrunken console. What a wild, wacky timeline this is. The SEGA Mega Drive Mini 2, as it’s known, will feature a lineup of new games that weren’t present on the OG console, which sort of makes you wonder whether they willfully withheld some heavy hitters the first go-around so as to sell us this new one. Call me a cynic. You wouldn’t be wrong.

Genesis does… what everybody else is doing

Now, SEGA Japan have unveiled some further details about the games and features we’ll be seeing on the Mega Drive Mini 2. Per NintendoLife, here’s the list that they’ve divulged (note this isn’t exhaustive and we’ve been told it’s only going to expand):

  • Sonic CD (Sega CD)
  • Shining Force (Sega CD)
  • Silpheed (Sega CD)
  • Mansion of Hidden Souls (Sega CD)
  • Night Striker (Sega CD)
  • The Ninja Warriors (Sega CD)
  • After Burner 2 (Genesis)
  • Out Run (Genesis)
  • Out Runners (Genesis)
  • Virtua Racing (Genesis)
  • Super Hang On (Genesis)
  • Sonic 3D Blast (Genesis)
  • Shining in the Darkness (Genesis)
  • Vectorman 2 (Genesis)
  • The Ooze (Genesis)

  • Alien Soldier (Genesis)
  • Rainbow Islands Extra (Genesis)

If it ain’t the Jon Burton version of 3D Blast, take it back.

That’s a pretty decent starting selection, if I do say so myself. All the niceties from the original Genesis/Mega Drive Mini will be included, such as the flashy UI and emulation functions. The system hits the US and Japan on October 27th; though if you’re in Europe, patience is proving to be a virtue as it’s yet to be dated for these waters. I don’t mind, though. Just another in a long series of humiliations. No biggie.

Will you be picking up the Mega Drive Mini 2? Let us know!
