Sea of Stars price for digital versions announced

The game will cost $34.99 USD at launch, with regional pricing applied on all platforms and countries.

We’ve been eagerly awaiting the release of Sea of Stars, the upcoming indie RPG from Sabotage Studio. Given its retro-RPG style and long development cycle, we’ve been expecting a beefy game. This, naturally, has led to much speculation on what the price of Sea of Stars will be when it launches in August.

Now, we have that information. Thanks to a recent Tweet, the developers have confirmed that Sea of Stars will cost $34.99 USD at launch. With multiple hours of content and a full story to uncover, this price is well-within expectations for an indie RPG.

What this price means for Sea of Stars

Sea of Stars is a large game; we anticipate a length of at least 20 hours, maybe approaching 30. Given that it’s an RPG, that’s not a surprise. From the demo we’ve played and the gameplay scenes we’ve seen so far, it looks like it’ll be well worth the price.

The cost of $34.99 USD for the digital version is well expected. If you’re not in the U.S., though, fear not: regional pricing will be applied.

It should be noted that this price is solely for the digital version, which will launch on August 29. A physical version has been confirmed, but the price of this release hasn’t been revealed yet. Nor has a release date been confirmed for the physical version; we only know that it won’t launch alongside the digital version.

What is Sea of Stars?

Sea of Stars Combat
Monsters and magic abound!

It’s understandable that you want to know what you’re getting in for when you pay over $30 for a game. Sea of Stars is the latest game from The Messenger developer Sabotage Studio. It takes place in the same world as that game, but switches the genre to a retro-inspired RPG.

The main story is the quest of the two Children of the Solstice, Valere and Zale, learning the secrets of Eclipse Magic. This force, combining the powers of the sun and the moon, is a long-lost art that’s the only defense the world has against the evil Fleshmancer and their armies. There’s six playable characters on the team and several NPCs to find and interact with, and tons of side quests to build out the world.

The game takes specific inspiration from Chrono Trigger, Super Mario RPG, and the Mario & Luigi series. With a bright pixel art aesthetic and retro-style music, it certainly looks like an HD rendition of a 16-bit RPG.

Where and when can you get the game?

Daniel Hein is either A) a lifelong video game fanatic, writer, and storyteller just sharing his thoughts on things, or B) some kind of werewolf creature. We're not quite sure which yet. He also makes mediocre video game retrospectives (and other content!) on YouTube where you can watch him babble on for hours about nothing.
