PS5 Variable Refresh Rate feature coming soon

Graphics will be made smoother with the new PS5 Variable Refresh Rate feature.

More big plans are on their way to the PlayStation 5. Along with the PS5 and PS4 software updates, Sony revealed more support on its way to the PS5 system. Sony plans to release a Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) feature sometime in the upcoming months. The VRR feature will be able to be used on any game on the PS5, even if the game itself doesn’t officially support it.

What is the PS5 Variable Refresh Rate?

A Variable Refresh Rate can do many things for your gaming experience, particularly on HDMI-2.1 compatible monitors. VRR features sync the fresh rate of the display to the console’s graphical output. It also enhances visual performance for PS5 games by minimizing or eliminating elements such as frame pacing issues and screen tearing. Other features with a VRR include reducing input lag, making games feel smoother when rendering scenes, and making the graphics nice and crisp overall.

Though not every PS5 title supports VRR officially, players can still apply it to their games to improve video quality. PlayStation addresses this may create unexpected visual effects; in that case, players can instantly turn off the VRR feature whenever needed. They warn “results may vary” depending on the TV or monitor being used.

Regardless, PlayStation teases there will be more news to come about VRR. With this comes news of games enabling VRR support through its patches and more details. I’m sure some people are keeping their fingers crossed for games like Elden Ring to officially support VRR.

When do we get the VRR feature?

No official date has been given for the PS5 Variable Refresh Rate feature other than being “on the horizon” and “in the months ahead.” Until then, PS5 players just have to enjoy the console as is while looking forward to the upcoming future improvements.
