What is Pole Calibur?

Remember a time before video game consoles seemingly had a different accessory made for nearly every genre? SEGA embraced the idea of bringing the arcade home and did so with a fishing rod controller for the SEGA Dreamcast to play with SEGA Bass Fishing. The fishing rod features rumble technology that enables the controller to simulate the sensation of a fish nibbling or biting your hook. But what brings us to the party is the fishing rod’s built-in motion sensors that track upward, downward and lateral movement.

To the surprise of many, the fishing rod is actually compatible with Soulcalibur, and when two fishing rod controllers are connected, ole Calibur was born. Even today, “the pole still burns!”

Once in the game itself, the fishing rod controller can be used similarly to the Wii Remote to waggle your way to victory. While the face buttons are functional within battles, where’s the fun in that?

Here at Mega Visions, we play by the simplest rules: waggle only! When in battle, you can only wave and pray with the rod as opposed to those weirdo traditionalists who use buttons. And to ramp things up, I decided to wear a dino mask to truly feel the power of Lizardman as Lizardman while fighting Lizardman!
