About Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City

Resident Evil: Welcome to Racoon City is written and directed by Johannes Roberts. The film stars Avan Jogia, Kaya Scodelario, Tom Hooper, Chad Rook, Hannah John-Kamen, Robbie Amell and Marina Mazepa. The movie will not follow the plot from the previous film franchise. Instead, this one tells the origin story from the original Resident Evil games and is based on the first two titles.

Roberts states that this film adaptation tells the story of Raccoon City’s downfall through old school horror film techniques. As opposed to the action-centered Resident Evil movies that came before, Roberts’ vision was to stay true to the video game’s horror roots. Films like The Exorcist and The Shining heavily inspired Roberts when designing the atmosphere for his interpretation of Raccoon City.

In addition to the setting, Roberts spent much time refining the movie’s central characters. Part of this was in the casting. The director feels many video game adaptations are held back with actors who may look the part but fail to encapsulate the characters’ personalities. To set his film apart, Roberts made sure to give the characters realistic three dimensional traits.

To help ensure the film would stay authentic to the Resident Evil video games, Roberts and his team worked directly with Capcom. The game developers even gave them the original blueprints for both the Spencer Mansion and the Raccoon City Police Department to best replicate the games.

Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City premieres in theaters November 24 this year in the United States. It premieres November 25 in Australia and December 3 in the United Kingdom.
