Nintendo will acquire longtime development partner SRD

This marks Nintendo's second major acquisition in just over a year.

Nintendo released an official statement this morning, announcing that it will acquire its longtime development partner SRD.

Nintendo and SRD expect the official deal to close on April 1, 2022. On that date, Nintendo will officially gain exclusive ownership of the Tokyo-based development studio and make it a direct subsidiary. In a year marked by major gaming acquisitions, Nintendo explains their reasoning for the purchase.

Completion of the Acquisition (exclusive of treasury stock) will serve to strengthen the management base of SRD and secure the availability of software development resources for Nintendo, in addition to facilitating and anticipated improvement in software development efficiency.

The two companies already have a long-established working relationship that dates back to games like the original Super Mario Bros. In addition, the developer assisted in a number of recent major first-party titles. Notable examples include Animal Crossing: New Horizons and The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.

A year of acquisitions

The acquisition of SRD is the second by Nintendo in just over a year. Last January, Nintendo also purchased Next Level Games, the studio behind Luigi’s Mansion 3. The studio is now currently in progress developing the next Mario Strikers game.

Aside from Nintendo, other major companies have also recently shaken up the gaming landscape with major purchases. For example Sony made the shocking purchase of Bungie for $3.6 billion. In addition, Microsoft also made headlines with its acquisition of Activision Blizzard.
