NieR producer Yoko Taro’s holiday message suggests series is ‘finished’

Will we never see a new NieR game again?

Sad news for NieR fans seems to be coming in by the creative director of the game himself. Wearing his classic Emil mask, a character from the NieR series, Yoko Taro announced the news in a holiday message to fans: NieR is over… or is it?

Is NieR really over?

In a holiday message from the NieR team, series producer Keiichi Okabe, music producer Yosuke Saito, and creative director Yoko Taro wish everyone a happy holiday. While laughing and enjoying fond memories of producing the video game series together, they asked Yoko Taro if there’s anything new he wants to do with the series. It was then the game’s creative director delivered the sad news:

“We announced it here today folks. The NieR series is now finished!”

So that’s it? No potential NieR sequel in our future? Well, that’s the thing… we don’t really know. If you’ve ever seen Yoko Taro on screen, then you’d know he’s a rather unconventional character. Much like his games, which stand out as rather unique, the game director appears in the same way. In classic Yoko Taro fashion, it’s completely in the realm of possibility that he’s simply teasing us and that he already has another game in the works. Yoko Taro jokingly adds on “But… you never know… I might do more if I get a big ole’ pile of money.” I hope he gets the biggest sum possible, because I’d love to see more of the NieR world from his mind.

A NieR sequel could still happen

I fully believe this could be a veiled message to hint that Yoko Taro already has future NieR plans lingering on his brain. With the success of NieR: Automata and the series’ re-release, NieR Replicant, I see no reason why Square Enix wouldn’t give him that bag of money. Whether he decides to continue with the NieR universe or not, the team wishes everyone “Happy Holidays and wishing you a great new year!”
