Next Virtua Fighter is a game “restart”

Back in September, SEGA teased a new Virtua Fighter project at Tokyo Game Show. Virtua Fighter x Esports was described as “a project commemorating the 60th anniversary of SEGA” When asked if it was a game, the CEO said more information will be shared in the future.

During SEGA’s latest financial meeting, they confirm it is a game “restart”, focusing on competitive gameplay.

“Created as the world’s first 3D fighting game in 1993, Virtua Fighter caused a huge sensation at the time and is still loved by fans…The game will restart as an eSports title, initially in Japan. Project details will be announced from time to time, so please keep an eye out.”

In a previous interview with VGC, Virtua Fighter creator Yu Suzuki was asked if he would return to work on Out Run or the legendary fighting series. He replied saying,

“Yes I would like to [return to those]. If you’re going to ask me what, I can’t answer that!”

When asked if he was already in discussions regarding Virtua Fighter or Out Run, Suzuki responds with:

“Yes, there might be something [happening]. But since the IP you mentioned are owned by Sega, I would need to work with them. I am a special consultant with Sega, but we will need to talk”
