NetherRealm Studios new job openings raise questions of next game

Fans of NetherRealm Studios have been waiting eagerly for even whispers about a new game in the works. True, we have had some goodies over the past few years, depending on your opinion. The Mortal Kombat movie was a critical success and opened the door to further film and TV adaptations down the line. And Mortal Kombat 11 released its Ultimate Edition in 2020, just a year after the titles launch.

But come on! It’s been over two years since then, and we’ve heard nothing, nada, nope. Rumors were swirling during lead up to The Game Awards 2021 that NetherRealm would be revealing a new game. And most of us held our collective breaths waiting. That did not come to pass. Instead of an announcement, we were told that there were “too many variables” preventing the studio from showing a new game.

Many believed that was a hint there is a new game in development. And, just a few weeks ago, Jonathan Andersen, a Senior Production Manager, supposedly leaked Mortal Kombat 12 in a now deleted tweet.

Help wanted! Get over here!

Now, eagle eyed individuals noticed new job listings posted on their website that may shed some light on the situation. According to the posts, NetherRealm is seeking a Senior Designer as well as a Senior Artist/Animator and various positions in the 3D Artists division. All the postings have similar wording, indicating that the hires will work on the next project. There is mention of “direct experience in implementing navigation and/or combat mechanics (with a preference on melee-based combat).”

There also appears to be something moving and shaking in the Mobile Gaming departments, judging by the number of listings under that category. There’s no telling what NetherRealm has up its sleeves. But whatever it is, we can probably expect something grand, dark, and gory.

A bit nerdy, a bit punk rock princess, and a whole lot of mom, I'm constantly in motion. I have an enthusiasm for gaming and the cultural complexities of entertainment, both past and present. I don’t believe in limiting myself to one kind of genre in books, comics, manga, anime, music or movies. I prefer to seek out hidden gems in panned pieces, uniqueness in the mundane and new outlooks on nuances.
