NetherRealm producer teases game announcement in December

NetherRealm's Senior Production Manager Jonathan Andersen teased a potential announcement for December.

Based on a Tweet from one of its employees, we may soon be getting an announcement on NetherRealm Studios’ next project. NetherRealm’s Senior Product Manager Jonathan Andersen responded to a Tweet asking if we’ll find out what the company is working on this month. His answer, a simple “eyes emoji” obviously hints at something — but exactly what remains unknown.

See the original Tweet and Andersen’s response below:

We’re in December now, the period where studios usually reveal what they’re working on for the next year. NetherRealm hasn’t officially announced anything for 2022 yet, but rumors on what its next game could be have been buzzing for a while.

Andersen predictably remained tight-lipped on what his Tweet means, simply clarifying that “I’m looking respectfully” in a follow-up message. Yet the initial Tweet was enough to get NetherRealm fans excited for a potential announcement.

NetherRealm Announcement Characters

What could this NetherRealm announcement be?

NetherRealm Studios is famous for two fighting games series: Mortal Kombat and Injustice. Of course, speculation on this NetherRealm announcement and what it could be for has focused around those titles. It’s likely that NetherRealm is working on either Mortal Kombat 12 or Injustice 3, though the company hasn’t confirmed either game yet. It’s also entirely possible that NetherRealm is working on a new property altogether, but there’s no solid evidence for this.

Considering the company has stopped releasing updates for MK11, it stands to reason that they’re close to revealing whatever they’re working on. If Andersen’s Tweet means what we think it means, we’re going to be learning about it very soon. Perhaps at the Game Awards?

For now, it’s just a matter of waiting for NetherRealm to make an official announcement. But assuming Andersen isn’t leading us astray, we won’t have to wait very long.

What do you hope the NetherRealm announcement is? Let us know!
