Netflix Games launches globally with 5 games, promises more to come

It’s the dawning of something new…kinda?…for Netflix. The streaming mogul announced earlier this year that it would be dipping its toes into the gaming industry. And today, it made good on that promise with the global launch of Netflix Games.

The streaming platform has enabled a new tab for subscribers that will allow access to, at this time, five different mobile games. Three of the titles, according to some sources, are a bit basic- Shooting Hoops, Card Blast and Teeter Up, which do exactly what their titles imply. The other two games are based on the Netflix’s smash hit show Stranger Things. Stranger Things: 1984, released on mobile in 2017 and Stranger Things 3, have a beat em’ up play style. So far, neither game has received very favorable ratings by critics or players, having only a 4-rating star on Google Play.

More Netflix Games to come

Netflix Games doesn’t plan to stop there. In late September, it announced the addition of Kate: Collateral Damage, a rouge-like action game based on the earlier released film, Kate. It is available for wishlist right now on Steam for $7.99 USD. Publisher Ludic Studio has an “overwhelmingly positive” rating for its previous game. So, Kate: Collateral Damage might be the talk of the turkey table, scheduled for release on November 22.

The US is not the first to be privy to the new offerings from Netflix. In September, Shooting Hoops, Card Blast and Teeter Up were made available to Netflix subscribers in Spain, Italy and Poland. Around the same time, it closed the deal to acquire Night School Studios, the game developer behind Oxenfree and AfterParty. The acquisition maybe the first of many, as Netflix heads into the future.

The rollout today is on Android only, at no extra cost to subscribers. Netflix has assured iOS users that Netflix Games is “on its way.
