Mario Odyssey multiplayer mod adds 10-player shenanigans

Modder CraftyBoss launched a mod that adds 10-player multiplayer to the game — making for some crazy shenanigans.

Super Mario Odyssey made waves when it launched in 2017 (side note: I just realized that this game is almost five years old and I kinda hate that). With its unique capture mechanic and tight platforming, it became a massive commercial and critical hit. Yet one aspect where Super Mario Odyssey lacked is the multiplayer. While there is a mode where a second player controls Cappy and Luigi’s balloon hunting mode makes for some fun shenanigans, the game didn’t include a true co-operative experience.

Thankfully, modder CraftyBoss went above and beyond in filling that gap. They released a mod that adds 10-player synchronous multiplayer to Mario Odyssey. And this mod promises plenty of fun and chaos.

See a trailer for the mod below, courtesy of CraftyBoss on YouTube:

Super Mario Odyssey multiplayer shenanigans

This mod lets up to 10 people play through Odyssey at the same time on their own Nintendo Switch. You can run around and collect Moons or just messing around, depending on your mood. Costumes and Moon collecting sync across all players, so you can all head off on your own adventures and still add to your total Moon count. You can also share captures, opening up the floodgates to some wacky shenanigans.

Obviously, Super Mario Odyssey wasn’t explicitly designed with a full co-op playthrough in mind. While there’s no indication that you can’t play through the whole game like this with nine others, it isn’t the ideal or intended experience. But if this trailer is any indication, the end result is a lot of fun.

In order to play this mod, you and your companions will all need a modded Switch console and a copy of the Super Mario Odyssey ROM. Given that modding your Switch can result in Nintendo permanently banning your console from its online service and/or bricking your console, it’s worth taking caution should you decide to pursue this.
