Mania Mode, new DiscoCactus game music album, available now

If you’re a frequent flyer on the gaming convention circuit, there’s a decent chance you may have heard of indie band DiscoCactus. Though, disappointingly, they are not made up of a series of spiked plants grooving to archaic sixties tunes, they are pretty sick when it comes to mining our collective love for game OSTs. They rejig familiar tracks, from the PS1 to the GameCube, reinterpreting them in fresh, new, endlessly danceable ways. Having put in numerous performances since their inception, to rapturous applause, they’ve decided the time is right to serve up a proper album; and it’s now available, named ‘Mania Mode’ after Sonic Mania. ‘Tis a fitting name, for that game’s music features heavily in the lineup.

GamesPress has the scoop on this one. Describing DiscoCactus as “one of the most impressive groups both in terms of their unique arrangements and unbridled talent,” it’s revealed that the collection “includes some of the greatest game music from across fan-favorite indie games and beyond, including everything from Persona 5 and Sonic Mania to DELTRARUNE and Hollow Knight.”

Getting the band back together

But don’t take our word for it – here’s the official statement from the band themselves. “This album is a celebration of our passion for videogame music,” notes the group. “We love digging into our favorite musical themes, taking them apart and seeing what makes them tick, and then reinterpreting that material in a new way. We utilize a variety of styles and genres in our arrangements to reflect our experiences with the games, and bring them to life with the help of the many talented performers with whom we collaborate!”

Have a gander at the full tracklist of the album below:
