Kingdom Hearts 4 announced for 20th anniversary

Magic in the Making.

Kingdom Hearts fans, rejoice! The beloved series released its first game back in March of 2002, meaning the series now celebrates its 20th anniversary. The Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary celebrates with a lot of big reveals, messages, and goodies. Square Enix’s biggest reveal? Kingdom Hearts 4 has officially been announced!

Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer

The trailer starts off looking very familiar, and if you’re a big Final Fantasy fan, you’re about to realize why. As italicized text flashes across the screen, teasing of the story to come, we finally get a glimpse of Sora. Sora appears rather hyper-realistic compared to his previous counterparts. As he goes to face a large heartless in battle, he scales up the side of the building, keyblade in hand.

Any of this ringing any bells to you? That’s because this part of Kingdom Hearts 4 is taking pointers from Final Fantasy Versus XIII. Though the game was remade into Final Fantasy XV, it seems Nomura seeks to fulfill his original vision through Kingdom Hearts. Fans may remember the reMind ending from Kingdom Hearts III following the same beats.

Donald and Goofy also make an appearance near the end of the trailer, seeming to explore some dark area as they muse about where Sora has gone. In the darkness, a mysterious figure confronts them: “Hey! Just where do you think you’re going?” before the screen fades to black. Who knows what shenanigans they may be up to this time?

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link trailer

Along with the Kingdom Hearts 4 trailer, they announced a new mobile game: Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Set in the realm of Scala ad Caelum, players control at least three playable characters. The combat follows an action-based system, similar to the console games. Players can partake in a closed beta test sometime later in 2022 on iOS and Android devices.

Already, the Kingdom Hearts 20th anniversary kicks off with a bang. With the announcements of both Kingdom Hearts 4 and Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link, let’s hope to hear even more exciting news throughout the year!
