Kickstarter launched for new SEGA Genesis game Insane Pain

A new indie fighting game for the SEGA Genesis is coming, and you can help fund it on Kickstarter.

Indie developer Blast Process Games launched a Kickstarter campaign to fund Insane Pain, a fighting game for SEGA Genesis.

Blast Process Games founder Axel Mende describes Insane Pain as a tribute to the classic fighting games of the 90s. Mende also explains two of the biggest inspirations for the game are Mortal Kombat and Killer Instinct. In fact, they modeled the 3D pre-rendered character sprites in the game directly after the style of Killer Instinct.

Insane Pain features six unique playable characters and eight arenas. In addition, the game features two boss battles. Players must take on both the sub-boss and the final boss to beat the game. The game also features a unique style with its dark neon aesthetic and soundtrack by Schwefelholger.

The developers are nearly done creating the game. However, they began the Kickstarter campaign in order to fund the production of a physical release. The game will be available through DragonBox Shop upon release. It will ship in a high-quality magnetic box, complete with the game’s signature art.

Familiar gameplay with a unique feel

The campaign sets the player in a futuristic dystopia where crime is at an all-time high. Because of this most prisons are overcrowded, and society relies on private organizations to imprison criminals. One of the prisons is run by an evil warden named Exitor.

In addition to experimenting on the inmates, Exitor also places them in a brutal tournament named Insane Pain. The inmates fight to the death in the tournament to win the ultimate victory of freedom.

Insane Pain’s gameplay features mechanics akin to the likes of Mortal Kombat. The game even features its own version of a fatality, known as “Execute”. In addition, the game utilizes a combo system to deal extra damage by performing moves in a sequence. Another feature SEGA Genesis fans will appreciate is compatibility for the six-button controller.

Overall, the passion the developers at Blast Process Games have for fighters really appears to shine in this creation. Fans who grew up playing Mortal Kombat on the Genesis should feel right at home with this title. However, the unique dark neon art style and dystopian storyline promise to offer players a game with a signature aesthetic.

About the campaign

The Kickstarter campaign began Sunday and will run until November 30. With over $7,000 raised already, Blast Process Games are nearly halfway to their $14,498 goal. In addition, backers who pledge enough to qualify for the Ultra Edition and Insane Edition will receive various collectible items along with the game.
