Gotham Knights story will unfold over multiple playthroughs

Gotham Knights has been teasing us with goodies all summer. With less than a month away from its October 21 release date, we’re soaking up all we can about the unique open world game. Now we know a little more about the way the story unfolds.

As we have previously talked about in our coverage, Gotham Knights has 4 playable protagonists. Batman, Commissioner Gordon and The Joker are all dead. It is up to the rest of the Bat Family to take on the big bads and smaller criminals of Gotham’s dark and dirty streets. Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood and Robin all have their own connections to Batman, their own history. That history is revealed as the player makes their way through the game.

Robin waits to strike at his enemy

Warner Bros. Montréal dropped another tidbit this week, in the form of an interview with PLAY magazine. According to game director Geoff Ellenor and cinematics director Wilson Mui, Gotham Knights has four stories, not just one. “You will not see all of it in a single playthrough,” Ellenor said.

Because of the way each character reacts to the events, their backstory, and even their interactions with the villains, this makes sense. Each playthrough will add more to the individual and overall story arcs. “Structurally, we’re gonna have a very similar scene that overall falls in the flow for each character, but each character has their own version of that,” Mui said.

We will see this in the way the character move and their dialog. “If you were to look and play Batgirl, you’re gonna get Batgirl’s version, but if you play Robin, you’re gonna get Robin’s version of that same scene. Some of them are very similar in how they do it, but they’re gonna have little subtle differences,” Mui explained.

We’re excited to see how this plays out in Gotham Knights. For more of our comprehensive coverage, check out everything we know about it.
