Final Fantasy picture book features Cid, a chocobo, and lots of shenanigans

A new Final Fantasy picture book "Chocobo and the Flying Ship" is available for preorder.

Square Enix plans to publish a new Final Fantasy picture book called Chocobo and the Flying Ship (チョコボと空飛ぶ船). Featuring an inventor named Cid and a little chocobo, the two work together to build a flying ship.

What is the Final Fantasy picture book about?

Chocobo and the Flying Ship’s release date trailer showcases fun watercolor-style paintings featuring a curious-looking chocobo on an adventure with Cid. This book’s iteration of Cid characterizes him as an inventor as he and the chocobo work on building a flying ship. It seems the dynamic duo causes a bit of trouble throughout the trailer as they get in various battles on their journey.

Kazuhiko Aoki, director of Chocobo’s Mysterious Dungeon 2, has been credited as the author. Character designer Toshiyuki Itahana, known for his work in Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles, worked on the project as well for the art. The Final Fantasy picture book includes 40 fully-colored, B5-sized pages.

New merchandise releases along with the picture book. Those interested can pick up an illustrated tote bag featuring the characters. A special set comes with a message from Aoki and Itahana and also includes a bonus product of your choice. The bonus products consist of a t-shirt, mug, jigsaw puzzle, pouch, or cushion.

When does the book release?

Chocobo and the Flying Ship releases December 16, 2021 for ¥1,320 (~$11). The special set of merchandise costs ¥2,750 (~$24). Preorders are currently available for both the picture book and the merchandise. Bonus items can only be snagged during the pre order.

Square Enix has released books in the past, but this one in particular stands out as pretty unique compared to their novelizations. Fans of Final Fantasy won’t want to pass up on this cute adventure. After all, who doesn’t think chocobos are adorable?
