Evil Dead: The Game sells over 500,000 copies in first five days

Sam Raimi, creator of the somehow-evergreen Evil Dead horror franchise, must be laughing all the way to the bank. After a series of film and TV-based resurrections of the long-dormant IP (you could say it was cold in the ground; irony, or something), Sabor Interactive decided to dip their toes into the lucrative gaming market, pitching Evil Dead: The Game. It’s asymmetric. It’s multiplayer. It’s got asymmetric multiplayer.

Plagued by numerous delays, the studio nonetheless assured players these were purely motivated by a desire to ensure the highest quality experience. And it’s paid off, because critics have lavished praise on the title – and well, I’ll tell you what ain’t dead: the financial figures over at Embracer Group, owners of Sabor. This baby has sold like hotcakes.

Evil Dead sales numbers

Per PC Gamer, Evil Dead: The Game has cleaned house, moving over half a million copies in less than a week of availability. Impressive stuff. “In the first five days after its release, as mentioned in theĀ full year report of the Embracer Group,” states the report, “Evil Dead sold over 500,000 copies.” This number was likely bolstered by its digital versions and crossplay compatibility, which lend it a real ‘eh, might as well pick it up to blow up my mates sometime’ vibe. See, I get that feeling all the time – just me?

Raimi, you madman. How did you get away with this?

Chris Livingston, of PC Gamer itself, had the following to say about why he thought the game has found such success. “The survivors have a surprising amount of power which makes it more than just a game of hide-and-seek, and the demons have a lot of fun tricks up their rotting sleeves. The nature of the objectives challenge players to move quickly at times and stand their ground at others, and the advantage seems to swing back and forth between sides a few times in each match, so both the survivors and the demon can experience moments of triumph and feelings of panic.” Average night in Vegas, then.

Congrats to all the teams involved with adapting Raimi’s madcap vision to a playable state. Enjoy your bonuses, before you’re conscripted for the inevitable sequel. Ah, modern gaming.
