Oooh, yeah! It's time for WrestleQuest!

Mega Cat Studio’s upcoming WrestleQuest asks the question, “What happens when pro wrestling and RPG fantasy collide in the ultimate pixel powered adventure?” Well, the game seems to allow players to powerbomb and piledrive their way through a massive pixel art universe where professional wrestling and RPG fantasy collide… in tights!

Gamers will be able to upgrade from aspiring rookie to world champ by training, learning, glamming and SLAMMING to the top of the title belt. And if any early promos, trailer, or teases are to be believed, It’s going to be one heck of a journey. If fact, as the media from the game’s website states, “This hero’s journey ain’t just an epic quest, it’s WRESTLEQUEST!”

Learn your moves from the greats who came before

One of the big selling points that WrestleQuest is heavily leaning into is the the usage of wrestling icons. Historic fan favorites like “Macho Man” Randy Savage, Booker T, Andre The Giant, Jake “The Snake” Roberts, Jeff Jarrett and many more. It will be possible to explore worlds based on these greats’ lofty careers.

But becoming a legend in the wrestling world is no easy feat. Even if you master all the moves and make it to the main event, you’ll probably end up on the receiving end of a shot to the head from Jeff Jarrett’s guitar.

Monsters and fantasy worlds beyond the mat

But while there have been countless official wrestling games over the years, what’s going to make WrestleQuest unique is the setting and gameplay. Not just turn-based moves in a wrestling ring, oh no, that’s been done to death. No this game will feature wild realms, exotic monsters, action figure fighters, and spandexed allies in a fantasy setting that twists your expectation of what type of a game this is.

During the Guerrilla Collective event Mega Cat Studios’ Zack Manko took players into the jungles of WrestleQuest and showed hoe the game will utilize unique dungeon dynamics. He even gave players a quick glance at at a few of the colorful new opponents like the Money Pig. The Pile Bomber takes out this adversary and seems to be one of the upgradable moves.

Manko also revealed that there’s some cave gameplay. Players will interact with color bulbs in these caverns, and you can alter them by placing color sheets on top as well as mixing colors to make new ones. This will allow you to interact with the world around you to a greater or lesser degree.

Collect, train, upgrade, and customize your gimmick

Like most RPGs, WrestleQuest will feature moves, attacks, and abilities that will be upgradable. But to be a true icon, it takes more than just farming and adding points to skills. Players will have to learns to not only be strong, but how to put on a 5 star match. You’ll need to master ‘hype’ to make sure your fans are on your side.

The game really seems to understand that half the fun of the wrestling world is the over-the top story-lines. Pulling no punches with the world they’ve created, Mega Cat has made sure the thrill and excitement of being in the arena is showcased as well.

A wild, wooly, world, of wonderful heroes and heels

Just from the graphics of the expected baddies alone, WrestleQuest look like it will be quite a lot of fun. The current trend of using a pixelated style to invoke nostalgia might be reaching its limit, but this game luckily seems to utilize it well. Just from the trailer, it’s clear Mega Cat has managed to tap into the classic style of Hulk Hogan’s Rock ‘n Wrestling from back in that day and a create a gripping storyline both in and out of the ring.

WrestleQuest hits the mat on Tuesday, August 8, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and PC. Are you excited for this genre-bending RPG? Let us know in the comments!
