Elden Ring Demake is being made for the Game Boy

Now you can get oneshot in 2D.

Developer and streamer Shintendo feels ambitious about his new project. With a newly dropped teaser trailer, Shintendo revealed his intentions to create an Elden Ring Demake for the Game Boy. And not only does he plan to make it in the classic 8-bit retro style, but wants it to actually function on “real hardware.”

Elden Ring Demake for Game Boy

In the Elden Ring Demake teaser trailer, Shintendo shows off some of the mechanics already developed. Using GB Studio 3.09, the demake’s trailer progress shows off the Chapel of Anticipation and the Erdtree. It already has some mechanics built, such as pressing A to roll, B to attack. Unfortunately, those two buttons didn’t save the player character from being defeated by the Grafted Scion, the familiar “you died” screen flashing across.

Shintendo shared some of his insight on what brought him to start working on the demake:

The idea was inspired by my friends, we played a lot of Elden Ring together but we also like to make small video game projects together. We were brainstorming possible uses for GB Studio 3.0 when the topic of Elden Ring inevitably came up.

Moving forward, it’ll be interesting to see how he incorporates certain character designs in the 8-bit format. “It’s very satisfying trying to figure out how to represent an awesome character design like Varre or Ranni in a 16 x 16 sprite,” Shintendo adds. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for seeing an 8-bit version of Malenia. She’s quite far into the game, so I won’t be surprised if my dreams never come to fruition.

How far will development go?

Shintendo has yet to decide how big the project will end up. In a Reddit post, he said he was “at least hoping to finish Limgrave area by the end of May.” Those interested can keep up with the demake’s development over on Shintendo’s Twitch, where he streams development. The creator also plans to post updates periodically on his YouTube channel.

Along with this, Soulsborneesque games have inspired others to demake it in the past. Developer Lilith Walther created the Bloodborne PSX Demake, a fun and creative project many Souls fans seem to love. The Elden Ring Demake has no “official” release date for its demo, only that it’s something Shintendo plans to actively work on and stream. The question is: will Elden Ring be harder or easier on the Game Boy?
