Disney is in talks with Capcom to bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

Communication to bring back MVC2 has started, but there remain complications.

The #FREEMVC2 campaign started by Maximilian Dood gained a massive following since August. The campaign originally caught the attention of Mike Mika, studio head of Digital Eclipse. This developer previously worked with both Marvel and Capcom to re-release Marvel vs. Capcom 2 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in 2009. In an interview conducted with Shacknews, Mika elaborates on his support to remaster the game and hints at how a deal between Capcom and Disney is possible.

Challenges to re-releasing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2

The video states that communication between Disney and Capcom has started. In addition, both companies are aware of the online campaign to bring back Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. However, while this appears promising, one major complication in bringing the iconic fighting game back stems with settling copyright issues.

Mika explains that with the changes in the business landscape between the companies, lawyers would need to be involved to work through copyright deals. This in itself poses a significant challenge to re-release Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. As explained in the video, hiring lawyers to help sort out copyright issues could even cost more than developing the game itself.

Mika also addresses the theorized hurdle of tension between Disney and Capcom due to the troubled development of Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite. Fortunately for fans, Mika explains that this issue is irrelevant. He states that many of the employees involved are no longer at their respective companies, and those that are likely wouldn’t stay to continue the feud.

As of now, there is no definitive announcement on whether Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 will get to see the light of day once more. However, the attention brought about by Maximilian Dood provides more hope than ever. With both primary parties in communication, a re-release of MVC2 ultimately comes down to the business side of the industry. If Disney, Capcom and Digital Eclipse all believe the project can be profitable even after the hefty legal bills, it’s possible fans will get to play Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 once again.
