Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 Re-release may finally happen

Maximilian Dood’s Twitter campaign to re-release Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has gained tremendous support from a major developer.

An online campaign may lead to a re-release of Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 following a tweet made by Digital Eclipse studio head Mike Mika on August 2.

Mika’s tweet comes in response to the #FREEMVC2 campaign led by the popular fighting game streamer Maximilian Dood. On the very same day of Mika’s response, Maximilian Dood uploaded videos to both YouTube and Twitter where he explains how Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 has been in “jail” for the past seven years. In his call to action, Max asks his fans to spread the hashtag #FREEMVC2 across Twitter to garner the attention of Marvel, Capcom and Digital Eclipse.

Max once again took to Twitter on August 6 to react to the tremendous support given to the campaign thus far.

This has blown up bigger than I think myself or anyone following could have imagined. If you haven’t already yet, RT/share #FREEMVC2 so we can get the game on modern platforms out of it’s unpurchaseable imprisonment!

Although the campaign proved to be successful in getting the attention of Digital Eclipse, Mika’s tweet brings up the point that a deal must first be reached between Disney and Capcom. This potential deal could be a real possibility, however, due to Digital Eclipse’s history working with both companies. Two examples include their partnership with Capcom to release the Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection and their partnership with Disney on The Disney Afternoon Collection.

Another hopeful sign is Digital Eclipse’s existing ties to Marvel Vs. Capcom 2. In Mika’s tweet, he reminded fans that he and other members of Digital Eclipse were responsible for the game’s 2009 port on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 when they were part of Backbone Entertainment. To the dismay of fans, their version of the game was removed from stores in 2013 due to Disney’s decision not to renew Capcom’s license for Marvel characters.

While the partnership between Marvel and Capcom was revived in 2017 with the release of Marvel Vs. Capcom: Infinite, the game’s poor reception made the possibility of seeing Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 again seem unlikely.

Mika is not the only member of Digital Eclipse interested in working on a Marvel Vs. Capcom 2 re-release. Executive producer Stephen Frost also responded by saying he, “would love to work on an updated release of MvC2.”

With the continued support of the #FREEMVC2 campaign from members of the Digital Eclipse team, fans remain hopeful that the noise of the movement will be too powerful for Disney and Capcom to ignore. Until then, however, all fans can do is continue to spread the hashtag and wait for the possible business deal to be arranged.
